The moon is high in the sky now and will be tomorrow. Forecast rather cloudy and windy so a low sheltered venue is appropriate – the Manifold valley.
Main venue – the Chimney – an unusual climb which I think everyone will be able to do. East facing at the belay to catch the warmth of the moon.

There is also a small cave to explore and you can go for a swim in it if desired.
Limited parking at the north end of the valley by the junction of a cycle track and a minor road. GPS 53.09824 -1.85461. Meet at 19.30. You can also park at Wetton and walk from there.

Richard Waltham has also offered to lead a small party (3 or 4) in to the appropriately named Skull Rift at Beeston Tor. Contact Richard Waltham if interested. There’s no particular gear requirements (of the caving variety). Old climbing gear will be fine.

Those just wanting a walk could meet at Wetton and arrange a stroll along the Manifold valley.
After all this, we should gather at the Royal Oak in Wetton.
Hope to see a large turnout

OK, we have a taker for Bertram’s Cave and Jackdaw’s Hole. That person has a Caver’s Guide to the Peak District and the latter is described as ‘very tight’. Cavers are usually modest (i.e. deliberately understate their achievements) so only one of us might make the Pub (which, I’ve checked, does now open on Tuesdays!).

If others are interested, please do get in touch. We expect to have set off from the Beeston Tor parking spots by 7pm at the very latest.

I was asked about what equipment would be needed.
A lot of people solo it but the descent might then be rather too fast. Bring harness, helmet and either rock shoes or approach shoes. I will have a rope and bits of gear. If you want to lead yourself, bring similar. A head torch might be useful for the darker bits!
Oh and a wet suit of you want to explore the further parts of the cave.

The Bertram’s Cave team is now three. We don’t like fast descents either (but I think you were talking about Ossam’s Cave?). We’ll be taking an Ab rope! Now all we need is a structural engineer to inspect the solitary bolt! Anybody – only one place remaining if you want an escort but feel free to come along and explore other parts of the system but it wouldn’t take long – you’re unlikely to get lost but I won’t be bringing any Fairy liquid to ‘unstick’ you if you go too far!
