Eskdale Camping Meet
Jun 29 – Jul 1 all-day

Organiser: Mike Tempest

An outstanding opportunity to experience the highest crags in England. There are very few places in Britain that offer the breadth of high calibre climbing that can be enjoyed on the crags of Scafell. East Buttress, Scafell Crag, Pike’s Crag and Esk Buttress provide many routes and scrambles of all grades to suit all tastes. The Wainwright baggers will also be ideally placed to complete all or some of the Eskdale Horseshoe.

The plan is to camp/bivvy at the Sampson’s Stones in Upper Eskdale (grid ref NY 217 053) – a stunning location on a grassy knoll with great tent pitches and even bouldering from the tent door. The outlook over Great Moss and the River Esk is fantastic. The walk in is a good hour, and some might say nearer 90 minutes. The shortest approach (a little boggy) would be from Cockley Beck, but the more scenic approach would be from the foot of Hardknott Pass on the Eskdale Green side via Brotherilkeld Farm.

Fell Race & Meets Forum
Oct 7 @ 10:30 am – 4:00 pm

Fell Race organiser: Mark Ward, or possibly a Mark Ward impersonator depending on his work schedule!

As always, the exact details for the race will be kept a closely guarded secret until the last minute – can’t be having any secret training now can we! The rules will of course penalise those with too high a level of physical fitness and ensure that any old punter can be crowned the next fell race champion. Meet at Sir William Hill Road Parking (S32 1AX) at 10.30am for an 11.00am start.

Meets Forum organiser: David Kirsfelds

An informal discussion of next years meets calendar will take place in The Moon Inn (Stoney Middleton, S32 4TL) following the fell race – we take your post exercise re-hydration and nutrition needs very seriously! The pub has kindly said that they will reserve some tables for us so keep an eye on Facebook or the website nearer the time to sign up. Discussion will commence post-lunch (approx. 2.00pm) and focus on generating the Tuesday Evening meets list and ideas for weekend and extended meets. Ideas from this discussion will be taken forward into the online voting system which will go live later on in the month.

Winter Walk: Grindsbrook Clough & Jacob’s Ladder

Meet at the parking close to Barber Booth (108847) at 10.00am for 10.30am start. We’re going up Grindsbrook Clough and down Jacob’s Ladder – about 7 miles.

Bouldering: The Depot, Manchester
Arrive anytime after midday depending on how long you think your arms will last!

Winter Lecture: Everest The Old Way
The Norfolk Arms, Marple Bridge
6pm – 8pm

This evening John Driskell and David Peckett take us through the story of driving from Barnsley to Basecamp. Having saved for two years, 5 of them set off in Nov 1967 and reached Everest in March of the following year! They lay claim to the first recorded trek to Everest. In 2010 they returned – a very different journey to a very different basecamp! We’ll hear about the initial journey, way back when, as well as some musings on the more recent trip.

Tom Livingstone is climber and writer based in North Wales. He loves trad and alpine climbing and has recently exceled himself by climbing the North (impossible) Ridge of Latok I in Pakistan. A second ascent of that peak and a first from that side. Pretty impressive.

As well as being rather good at climbing Tom writes beautifully and talks eloquently about his adventures. He is an affable chap, and is doing this lecture for us as a bit of a special favour (he joined the Mynydd on a Lundy trip a few years back) – so we should consider ourselves pretty lucky! Get it in your diaries now so as not to miss out!
