Scrambling meet March 25-26

Unfortunately this meet will no longer be going ahead due to lack of attendance. With only one person putting up their hand it wasn’t viable for David to run the weekend.

This may have been due to people not being available or potentially just a meet people aren’t keen for. It’s a shame if it’s the latter as last years meet had a great attendance and was really successful!

That said rather than lose a weekend if there is enthusiasm to do something AND we have someone willing to organise it I’m happy to run with a different meet. Feel free to reach out to me if you have an idea you’re willing to run with, even if it’s a day meet.

HAUTE PROVENCE – EASTER MEET @ HAUTE PROVENCE

Easter Meet – Haute Provence, Apr 8-15
This meet was originally planned for Easter 2020 and became the first major lockdown casualty. So we’ll try again.
We will be based in Buis-les-Baronnies. Buis is a charming town surrounded by excellent crags and a great destination for climbers wanting to sample a number of areas without having to drive too far. The area has some of the best sport climbing crags in the world, good walking and cycling and some local Via Ferratas. It is also just an all-round really nice place to go on holiday with lots of sun and daytime temperatures around 18 degrees. Rockfax do a guidebook for the area, released in 2009 (https://rockfax.com/climbing…/books/france-haute-provence/).
The nearest crag, Saint Julien (photo), is a 20 minute walk from the campsite and to quote that guidebook, “This enormous fin of rock dominates the skyline above Buis and just begs to be climbed. The routes are, with a few exceptions, brilliant, taking strong natural lines in two or more pitches”. There are 39 routes from 5 to 6a+, another 39 more above that and some VF’s. Most are south facing.
There are many lovely looking accommodation options via AirBnB and Booking.com and for those of us in tents or vans we plan to use the nice looking Municipal campsite (and swimming pool) right in the town centre (https://www.buislesbaronnies.fr/camping-municipal/). It officially opens in early March but I am hoping to make a provisional group booking very soon so please let me know ASAP if you’d like to be included.
If you’d like to make your own arrangements you can email them at camping@mairie.buislesbaronnies.fr. Prices on the website are from 2019 but as a guide they are, per day; Adults €3, Tent €2.50, Campervan €5.50, Car 2.50, Electric 6amp 3.50 or 10amp €4.
Travel options in addition to driving include flights or trains to Marseille, Lyon and Nice and additionally train to Avignon.
To help with both accommodation and hire car sharing I have set up a Google spreadsheet where people can share their plans and say if they are looking for people to share with. This is in the website / Members Area / Extended Meets / Easter 2023
Please let me know ASAP if you’re interested in coming, and if you would be using the campsite.

Our Second TUPTO of the year we’ll be keeping everything crossed in the hope of good weather and baked good being plentiful. This is a great opportunity for you all to come down and support your club.

We’ll likely be aiming to meet at 10:30a.m. at the Dennis Knoll Car Park in preparation for climbing at High Neb
.
Mostly we’ll be climbing, chatting to potential new members and drinking coffee.
We normally wrap things up by 4:00p.m. but any time you can put in on the day is appreciated.

NORTHUMBERLAND – BANK HOLIDAY MEET @ NORTHUMBERLAND

Northumberland – Early May Bank Holiday – 28 April-1 May
I’m very excited to be leading the Northumberland meet this year. The last time the club made it to the far north east of England was the early May bank holiday of 2017, which was a superb few days of climbing.
This year we’re going to be staying at the Demesne Farm Campsite (https://www.demesnefarmcampsite.co.uk/campsite) right near the village centre (read – pubs and tea rooms) of Bellingham. This also situates us perfectly for walking and biking in Kielder forest, and gives a range of crags within day-hit distance from Hadrian’s Wall to Kyloe, as well as proximity to ‘Britain’s original smart home’ for the nerds amongst us (so, everyone?! https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/north-east/cragside)
The club is going to put down a deposit at the start of February to reserve us at least 5 pitches for 10 people. If you’re interested in going, please send me a direct message on here or email/ text me (details in the members’ area of the website) ASAP, letting me know number in party/ tent/ van etc. Sign up early to avoid disappointment!

Ever found yourself just muddling through a sea cliff abseil set up, and sort of making it up as you go along? Or wondered how you might get yourself out of a sticky situation once you’d started trying to climb out?


Look no further! Here’s a chance to refine those skills, get slicker and quicker at the abseil stuff, so you can spend more time climbing! And whilst we’re at it, let’s spend a bit of time looking at some problem solving techniques we could employ if it all gets a bit sub-optimal. (Think abseiling into the wrong place and needing to get out, or the route being too hard for you, through to some more significant problems)


Some problem solving skills we could could cover might include:

      • Different abseiling set-ups and systems

      • Prussiking up a rope

      • Tying off belay devices safely

      • Improvised hauling/hoisting systems

      • Escaping the System

      • And much more!

Exactly what gets covered depends on time available, venue choice, existing skill levels and what you think you’d like to learn! You’ve got my time for the day, so pick my brains and learn as much as you can!

The club is planning a week of world-class, adventurous sea-cliff climbing on the
uninhabited island of Pabbay at the southern extremity of the Outer Hebrides next
spring. If you need a better idea of the nature of the trip then read Jack Gilbert’s
excellent article in the June 2021 Mynydd journal (available in the members’ area on
the website) and the destination article on UKC

The SMC guidebook “The Outer Hebrides” 2018 is excellent as is Scottish Rock by
Gary Latter Volume 2. Alternatively the logbook on UKC will give a good idea of the

The plan will be to gather in Oban and get the early afternoon ferry from Oban on Sat
20th May, arriving early evening on Barra. Weather permitting we will be ferried over to
Pabbay the same evening by Angus and his team at Hebridean Sea Tours. All being
well we will be picked up on Sun 28th May (again subject to weather) and taken back
to Barra and then get the ferry back very early on Mon 29th May to Oban. The island of
Pabbay is uninhabited so we will need to be self-sufficient with food and shelter. Fresh
water is available from a small stream.
Having spoken to the boat charters their prices will be going up next year due to the
present economic climate, by how much exactly won’t be known until early next year.
The price of the Calmac ferry is also likely to go up too. We plan to charter at least one
boat (maximum of 12) and also take some vehicles on the ferry from Oban to Barra to
help transport gear and people on Barra, particularly useful on the second Sunday after
leaving Pabbay – but before getting the Oban ferry back early on the Monday. We may
have some time on Barra on the second Sunday and then need to find somewhere to
stay that night.
To secure a place on the first boat a payment of £160 is payable on a first come, first
served basis (details below). This will cover the cost of the vehicles being taken on the
Oban to Barra ferry (shared out equally by everyone in the party) and the cost of the
boat charter to Pabbay from Barra. In addition you will need to pay individually either
as the driver of a vehicle or a foot passenger – at present this costs £31.80 (we will be
looking to book vehicles on the ferry in the New Year so don’t worry about booking
yourself as a foot passenger now). If you are struggling to make the £160 payment in
one go please contact me by email so that we can discuss a staged payment schedule.
If we get 12 people confirmed for a full boat I will then make this clear on the Mynydd
website and FB page. After that I will start a reserve list (just contact me and no need
to make a payment of £160) and when we reach enough on the reserve list I will then
contact you to request payment of £160 – we can then charter a second boat. The
second boat, depending on availability will have 11 or 12 places available – 23 or 24
members in total between two boats.
Please note that this £160 may not be the final cost and if it’s not we would require you
to make an additional payment on top. We just don’t know the final fuel and ferry costs
at the moment. In the event that the final cost goes above £160 and you have already
paid but are unable/unwilling to pay anything higher and you wish to drop out then you
will get a full refund. We will have to confirm numbers around Easter time with the boat
charter – be aware that if you then drop out we might not be able to offer a full or partial
refund. If we have a surplus by the end of the trip we will refund members.

SKYE WHIT WEEK MEET @ SKYE

27th May to 3rd of June 2023

Summer feels a million miles away right now, but to get you all inspired for the sending season to kick off, Whit Week planning is now well underway. We’ll be heading to The Isle of Skye, home to some of the best multi-pitch mountain trad in the country, as well as some stunning sea cliffs. But it’s not just about the climbing. There is equally good walking and scrambling to be found across the island, with gems including The Old Man of Storr, The Fairy Pools and of course the mighty Cuillin Ridge!

We’ll be staying at The Croft Bunkhouse in Portnalong, located within easy reach of the Cuillin and west coast sea cliffs. Well behaved dogs are welcome and there’s even a pub within walking distance – what more could you want!

The accommodation includes a Bunkhouse and several cosy two-person Wigwams; there will also be the option for people to sleep in their vans (unfortunately electric hook-up is not available, but both van and Wigwam dwellers will have access to the bunkhouse facilities). 28 places are available in total. All bedding is provided for the Bunkhouse, but you’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow for the Wigwams.

To secure your spot on the meet please transfer £185.00 to the usual club account, then let me (steve050@hotmail.co.uk) and James (treasurer.mynydd@gmail.com) know when you’ve paid and advise if you would like a place in the bunkhouse, a wigwam, or if you plan to sleep in your van.

Hi all, apologies about the short notice but please could you let me know by tomorrow whether you’re wanting to come on this meet, stay at https://www.chapelhousefarmcampsite.co.uk/, and if so if you’re bringing a car and what size tent. (Also let me know if you’ve already managed to stealth book!)

The site CHF have declared us a group and want us to make a group booking, so have requested that I book on everyone’s behalf. They seem to have had some negative experience with climbing clubs and are “close to banning them”, but I did my best to describe our civility. No money needs to go anywhere yet as it’s cash on arrival.

Update 11/05/23:

We have 23 of 28 attendees booked into Chapel House Farm and they are not taking any more for our group; “23 is enough.”. I have contacted the five late comers who didn’t make it and advised them to try Stonethwaite campsite which don’t take bookings. So if you’re reading this and missed out in letting me know at very short notice (sorry!) you’re interested, head to Stonethwaite Campsite; you’ll probably not be the only Mynydd there and it’s only a few minutes walk away from CHF (and you’re closer to a pub, maybe you win afterall!).

Secondly, CHF seem mildly edgy at lots of vehicles, so I (and perhaps for their perception of other climbing clubs) would appreciate you maximising lift sharing and the number of people in cars.

Thirdly, CHF are keen to know when we are arriving. I have said we’d arrive between 1300 and 2100 on Friday.

Fourthly, my thanks for getting your interest to me at such sort notice and my apologies if you didn’t find this post in time – overall hopefully not a big deal.

Finally, perhaps our best bet for group beers together are the lawns of the YHA or Glaramara Hotel.

Okay… now you can all go back to perusing the guidebooks! I can recommend Banzai Pipeline!

http://gwynant.com They no longer cordon off areas of the campsite for groups, but we will be able to camp together if you book as ‘Unallocated tent pitch no EHU’ on their online booking portal. You can add any additional cars or dogs on the ‘extras’ page.
I got a message from the campsite manager saying: “Before making your booking please familiarise yourself with our campsite rules and ensure all members attending are made aware of these before arrival. If your numbers exceed 15 we usually take a group bond, this is to ensure that other campers are not disturbed by noise or other unfriendly behaviour.”
