Hello. I am writing from Visp hospital in Switzerland to thank you for explaining a mystery which has puzzled us for several years!
I am a consultant here, and in 2008 I treated a strange English patient who had fallen in a gletcherspalte (is that englisch?) Despite having only minor leg injuries, he wanted his legs amputated so he could be fitted with <fjell running blades?>. We did not understand what is this fjell running? There is no German translation, so we had to refuse.
We were suspicions, so we contacted the Englisch Olympic Committee and the IOC, but they too had never heard of this sport or of this man. And since there were no brown envelopes of cash, they were not interested.
The recent posting by Herr Justin has explained it all. Herr Crowther was seeking a bigger prize than a mere Olympic medal! We at Visp hospital are proud of the small part we played in his victory a few years later!
Now that we understand the situation, we have teamed up with Peter Bland Sports in Kendal, England. Together, we are now able to offer the very latest fjell running blades, fitted and ready to go. In recognition of Herr Crowther’s involvement, we are able to offer a special 20% reduction to members of the Mynydd Climbing Club (is this a Welsh fjell?)
Our colleagues at the Schweizer tourist office have asked us to mention that the glaciers around Zermatt offer a huge choice of gletcherspalten ranging from a few centimetres to many metres and of many different depths. There is certain to be one which fits your needs. If you are still wondering where to look, the local mountain guides are offering a special rate for a day looking at the options. And the local helicopter company will be on hand to rush you to our fitting rooms!
Gruss Gott in true sport!
Doktor Bruch Knochen.
