    Hi Tom,

Thanks for the good advance notice – you’re just in time to flex our booking with the SYHA.

I daresay there are still others are out there to take your place but we’ll refund your deposit and ask those others to contact Mark to sign-up for this meet in the normal way. (If anybody does contact you direct about ‘your’ place, then please do redirect them to Mark).

    Cheers

    Richard / Treasurer

    Hi Steve,

Good shout – this is the Club’s 60th Anniversary Dinner after all and bound to be very well attended. I’m sure Sue will soon get the website fully up to speed in the nearterm but her first priority is lounging on a sofa at the moment with her foot up (sic)!

In between times, always assuming you know the date and venue from the Events calendar, you might want to refer to page 6 of the Journal (let Rachel J know if you haven’t received this yet but I think it’ll be landing on your doormat very soon).

There’s even one of these new fangled ‘Google-form’ things to fill out for your menu choices: http://tinyurl.com/mynydd-15.

And, of course, don’t forget to send the money in – the usual account £27 per head (but the Hotel room is extra, and paid direct to them, but a bargain at £25pp).

    They’ll love it!

(at least the Bradfield brewery is nearby).

    [Post Script]

Well, I didn’t get called ‘Bicycle Repair Man’ but the words “bloody useless” were muttered (but later withdrawn 🙂

    Notes to self:

    1) Have your mobile charged up in preparation for incidents of this nature – it really would have been ‘quite’ (in the American sense) useful
    2) Listen more closely when people say: “he’s in the car park in the White H….” (Whaley Bridge has a White Hart and a White Horse!)
    3) If offering Support Van services in future (especially if Steve’s involved) have a bigger van!

Good effort everybody. Surely a success as a complete cicuit of the Peak was completed even if the door-to-door finesse wasn’t quite (english version) there.

I’ll be there,….. in the support van
    – Pedal spanner at the ready
    – Puncture repair kit (but I think James has already stolen my glory?)
    – Battery charger
    – etc., etc.

Nobody’s called me ‘Bicycle Repair Man’ this week but I’m hopeful of adding it to my list. ‘Mr. Troll’ is already ticked and even an unimaginable (semi-) suggestion of “Kissinger” (perhaps I misunderstood her tone?).

I assume that there be a small gathering in the Shady Oak to celebrate the success? 7:30pm-ish judging by latest progress report. Surely Steve – you’ll be buying, right?

A great turn out. I counted 15 but maybe I missed somebody?

OK, the weather was not quite as nice as expected but surely the Buxton locals choose to live there precisely because of the perpetual gloominess (?) and it didn’t disappoint.

At least one ‘Go For it’ challenge was completed and a good number of routes under HVS were ascended without any grumbling that I heard. The film crew did grumble about the flat light though so we should probably expect all evidence of the evening’s exploits to reappear in monochrome.

No access issues whatsoever – in fact I think it was only J&R who even saw the “Climbing Prohibited” sign (they were lost trying to find the descent!).

My apologies to Andy – it seems we went to the wrong Pub but we found even more members in the Quiet Woman and it didn’t run out of Pork Pies.

Devotees of the latter will be pleased to hear that in another month or two we’ll have the opportunity to compare and contrast last night’s offering with those available in The Crown (Stockport). Nice little pinch pleating on the rim for variable pastry crunchiness and a bit of glaze too! It’ll keep Cooch happier as well (remember here that all things are relative) as the choice of Ales at the Crown is considerably superior.

We spotted this oversight at last night’s Committee Meeting. Don’t worry, we’ll be there!

The choice of Pub might be a challenge befitting of the rest of the evening! Its seems that many are either not open on Tuesday evening at all or are closed by 9pm (This, I think, includes The Red Lion in Wetton, The Watt Russel, The Glass and Jug and others).

However, I have just confirmed with the Royal Oak, Hurdlow that they will be serving Beer beyond 9pm (but they stop serving food at that time).

    And some more…..

Tom (aka “Newbie”) has written up his thoughts from the week in his blog (http://www.tomlivingstone.co.uk/Tom_Livingstone/Blog/Entries/2014/9/23_Lundy.html). He writes nicely, but climbs a bit harder than most of us! Nonetheless, some of his stress-coping techniques will sound familiar to all of us.
Remember Tom, you are a member now, so do join us again in the future. Sure, you have some idiosyncrasies (using boxer shorts as a food fly-net probably wins on that score!) but you’ll be very welcome.

    Fantastic!

P.S. And, thank you, I’ll never worry about the length of my forum posts ever again.

With the sudden arrival of Winter, there’s been teams down at Awesome wall already. We still get £1 off all full adult entries but it seems there’s some special even cheaper ‘555’ deal for pensioners which I don’t qualify for so I won’t bother telling you about it!
Please Note that the first Tuesday in November is a Full Moon.
I have at least one ‘special’ adventure in the making this winter but we might need a caving type along with us (and actually a New Moon would likely prove to be no less useful!). So if you are competent at caving and/or have other suggestions (like a nice nighttime walk) for this first ‘Full Moon Tuesday’ please let us know.

The Walling List will be published around the end of this month – We know you can’t wait (a conservative estimate is that Club members visited climbing walls over 1000 times last winter).

P.S. Anybody want an Awesome cheap 3-month pass (purchased during November)? I’ve not approached them on this since last year but can do so if you ask.

And now, (in case you haven’t seen them already)…. some fantastic photos have been published on Flickr (click on ‘gallery’ above). Mark, that was you right? Brilliant!

I really love the shot of Rob and Sonja – this was at the end of the day we arrived (Saturday 13th Sept), the Devil’s Slide area had been soundly ticked (at least 7 routes that I can think of) – their smiles speak for themselves. And, those smiles didn’t stop until several days after our return to the real world.

In between times, we’d completed over 200 ascents of more than 70 different routes. Literally every grade between Diff and E5 (without exception), more stars than I can count, all of the letterboxes (even the bunny) and some seriously large bar tabs in the Marisco!

Unfortunately, I missed the deadline for the Autumn Journal for the full write-up but be sure that some ridiculously long article will appear (or be submitted at least) in Feb-15’s edition possibly incorporating the Meet’s full data-cube with UKC-style averages available of everything, EVERYTHING.

And the meaning of life, the universe, EVERYTHING exactly? “42”, of course! Which just happened to be the average age of those who attended. But despite some serious good tallies no one person got that number of routes under their belt (or E-points, or even letterboxes despite some double-counting!) but the number of pints of ‘Old Light’ consumed? Hmmmm!

    Terrific.

P.S. Why, on the gallery page, do I get the caption for a photo whilst I hover over it but if I click through to flickr itself it goes AWOL?

“Cheap as chips” (or ‘Fish ‘n Chips’ at least – so long as its full).

I think we have 20 beds (but struggle a bit with their website as I know they have a members-only room) but we have paid a deposit and we get preferential rates – I’ll email you the £details but please (Mel) sort out the other details with YMC – especially for them to send you the key.

(Maria and I will be away so count us out on this occasion)

“Hard for the grade?” Certainly not and some would argue the opposite. But, the overall experience of walking to the cliff-top, finding the descent, finding the bottom of the route, etc. can leave your normal reserves of what to expect of a particular grade a little out of kilter. It’ll leave you feeling physically (and mentally) knackered every day (especially if its windy) so by the end of the week you might think VSs are E-something-or-another. A rest day or even two (remember we’ll have 8 climbing days albeit two of them a little short) are not a completely bad idea but if the sun keeps shining you’ll find it hard to resist!

    Hi Jules,

I know the ‘Crafnant Biking’ thing is allegedly a formidable challenge but are you suggesting that those who attend won’t have recovered more than a month later? [No cheating please and editing your original post!].
